Do you believe that nature can exist without man, but man cannot live without nature?
I for one believe that outrageous weather such as tropical storm and other related calamities are some of Mother Nature’s terrifying blunt force. Even billions of years ago, these kinds of phenomenons are way too impossible to elude. Once it strikes the land, all living and nonliving things will perish.
Collapsed bridges, crashed buildings, cracked roads, crumbled cables, colossal deaths tolls, and many more are some of the obvious impact of this land catastrophes. The lack of preparation and consciousness at times leads to more devastating state that might result to a long time recovery.
Among the natural disaster hitting the earth, flood or flooding is the most common and one of the worst calamity to be recorded. It has the erosive power to wipe away the entire city, coastline or area, and even cause extensive damage to life and property.
Flooding usually comes after intensive rain and can reach the height of at least 4 to 6 meters.
Ignore the risk and you will find yourself floating outside your house together with the shattered furnitures.
In countries having dry and wet seasons like the Philippines, flooding isn’t already new. The only way to survive is to practice prevention.
So here are some safety measures to protect you, your family, and your home from screeching floods.
BE ALERT
Always keep in mind that flooding can happen in any place any time. So make sure to take actions before the water starts to reach you. Monitor your surroundings, make sure that your house can withstand a huge amount of water. Listen to weather forecast and be updated always.
CHECK FOR LEAKS
Be sure to check any holes or leakages where water might seep through. Repairing porous rooftops and cracked walls immediately will prevent further damage to your home structure and stops water from crawling into your house.
CLEAR GUTTERS AND DRAINS
Make sure that the gutter and drainage doesn’t have any lumps such as leaves and debris to avoid clogging.
PREPARE FLOOD BARRIERS
Sand bags or any demountable flood control solutions are very effective in redirecting storm water and debris from flowing into your house during stormy days. Using this will filter out muddy sediments and keep out flood water.
SECURE YOUR BELONGINGS
Keep your belongings away from possible areas that are at risk of being damaged by floodwater. Elevate switches, sockets, circuit breakers and wiring at least a foot above the expected flood level. Make sure to shut off electricity breaker panel to avoid any unnecessary accidents.
PREPARE A GO-BAG
“Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you might need in an emergency.”
Emergency responders highly recommend to have a “go bag” or emergency kit to every household, See to it that your kit is complete with survival supplies in case of storms or any related natural disaster. Bring some of the basic necessities such as non-perishable foods, bottled water, first aid kit, and emergency equipments like flashlight, crank radio, extra batteries, emergency blanket, etc… Keep in mind that the important thing is the evacuation survival rather than long-term survival, so make sure that the things that you will be carrying are the necessary ones.
You see, natural disasters are utmost, sudden events caused by environmental factors that gives extreme challenge to humanitarian and developments. Earthquakes, windstorms, floods, and unthinkable disease all strike at any places on earth and sometimes come without prior warnings.
Bear in mind that being aware of what’s going to happened in case of any natural calamities will help you reduce the fear and anxiety.
Always be informed, make a plan, build a kit, stay alive.
