What Does the 2030 Climate Change Deadline Imply?

We have heard of the 2030 climate change deadline that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) set. It’s said that by 2030, the Earth may no longer be repairable to damage. What does it really insinuate? How bad is climate change going to be that the IPCC even put a deadline? Will the Earth not stand a chance for the negative effects of climate change? Are we Reaching the Point of No Return?

We have until 2030 to diminish greenhouse gas emissions.

According to a large number of activists and politicians, we have till 2030 to diminish greenhouse gas emissions before global warming hits a point of no return — where the damage cannot be undone anymore.

Believe it or not, this 2030 deadline depends on a Special Report by the United Nations International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2018. IPCC, by the way, is a consortium of the major climate scientists in the world. 

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was one of the first to publicize the deadline based on the report. Since then, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and many others have trumpeted this point of no return. 

Numerous scientists, however, including some who worked on the report, expressed uncertainty about the 2030 climate change deadline immediately after the release of the report. 

The co-chairman of the report, James Skea, informed The Associated Press that the panel never declared that we have 12 years to rescue the Earth.

Is there a problem with the interpretation of the report then? Apparently, there is!

Misinterpretation of the IPCC Report

The IPCC report states that the estimated time to reach 1.5 degrees Celsius of anthropological global warming ranges from 2030 to 2051. 

Actually, there was already a tendency of natural warming. Thus, the said range of time is the worst possible circumstance, wherein the warming triggered by human activities reaches 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial level. Besides, there is a wide scientific agreement that the consequence of reaching 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels will be a global disaster. There is no way to reach that level.

 Whatever the deadline is, climate change is worsening.

HOWEVER, the report does not assert that climate change is not a serious problem and does not require significant attention. 

“Certainly, climate change is a serious problem and it requires significant attention! I would even say it is the biggest problem that we have ever encountered since mankind arrived on this planet.”

Stating that we have until 2030 to implement drastic changes misinterprets the message of the IPCC report. Furthermore, it pressures us into pursuing risky and untested actions within a limited timeframe.

Who can come up with effective solutions in panic? No one, right?
